I stopped for an early dinner and to sample the beer at the San Diego Brewing Company. It was around 4 pm and there were a dozen or so people in the place. I decided on a table rather than the bar. I ordered the sampler which included the Grantville Gold, Blueberry, San Diego Amber, Old Town Nut Brown, Hop Goddess, and their Love Potion #9. The gold is a nice intro-to-microbeers beer. The Love Potion is a chocolate-raspberry flavored beer that was very good, and I don’t typically like fruity beers. The Hop Goddess was my favorite with a dark amber color with a caramel and citrus finish. They had six beers brewed on site and another 40 or so other beers available. Dinner was pretty good; grilled chicken sandwich with avocado and pepper jack cheese. Although located in a strip mall the place has a sports bar atmosphere once you’re inside. There are several TVs throughout the bar and dining areas. Parking is plentiful in the lot out front.

In all my visits to San Diego, I had had trouble finding a "worst brewpub" in town. I hadn't really thought of it before I visited this place, because every one that I've been to in San Diego County up to that point had been excellent.
This is a strip mall place, which is often a bad sign, but I've been surprised by these places before in other cities, so I didn't write it off immediately.
My original idea was to get to the place before happy hour ended at 6pm. The happy hour advertised on their web site indicated that the specials were 1/2 off appetizers and $0.50 off beer, but there are no prices online, so I had no idea how much everything would be.
It was a Tuesday, and I was taking the trolley (long walk to this place), which resulted in me arriving there just a couple of minutes before happy hour ended. I got a cramped seat at the bar next to where the servers enter their order into the computer, and waited for one of the bartenders to come by. After a few minutes, I thought about just leaving because I would have rather gone and gotten food elsewhere then come back to try the beer if I couldn't get the half-price food. The server who had continually been sidling up next to me asked "Have you been helped?" and before I could answer, the bartender finally announced himself.
Now it's easy to say "it was busy" and, yeah, it was busy, but the guys next to me got new beers before I even got a second look.
Talking to the bartender isn't always necessary for me, but their setup was confusing and necessitated it. They did have a house beer list up, but it was on the wall opposite of the bar, so I didn't see it until it was pointed out. They have a sh*t-ton of beers on tap, almost all locals, and had several house beers scattered through it, some of which were not labeled, and others that were I couldn't read from where I was.
It was weird too, because I would ask about the beers and was always asked "Do you mean the house beer?"
I put in an order for the carne asada nachos, which turned out to taste pretty good and ran $4.75 for the happy hour price. I ended up almost throwing up on the walk back, but it may have been that I just ate too much (the order was very large) or my stomach just didn't like the quick downing of the beer.
I gave up on getting a pint for happy hour ($0.50 off isn't that big of a deal anyway) and took my time deciding, finally settling on one of the unlabeled ones: the Hopopotamous (made me think of "Flight of the Conchords"). You can guess what this is: extremely hoppy. And that's pretty much all it was: no flavor, just hops.
After the place cleared out, I finally got the bartender to stop acting like I was bothering him and got a sampler tray. 7 for $8.75. Not a good deal, but they come in fairly large portions. I was hoping that he would offer to replace the Hopopotamous with another offering, but, no.
The tray ran: Golden Ale, an amber, a nut brown, a pale, "Smoke Jumper" (smoked version of the nut brown), Hopopotamous and a porter.
The only one I found passable was the golden, which had a nice flavor and a really smooth finish. It was almost like a light pilsner more than a lager.
The pale was just a less-hoppy version of the Hopopotamous and the porter was thin and, honestly, a bit nasty. I ended up leaving that one on the table.
The worst part about it was that he tried to overcharge me for those nachos that I had to fight to put in an order for.
Looking back, I shouldn't have ordered the pint, because it ran $5 and it was probably what was responsible for the subsequent nausea.
So I would recommend this place if you're like me and have exhausted all other SD County breweries and are looking for something to stick your tongue out at.
