Dempsey’s is tucked away at the back of a generic strip mall (but as a result it does front the river and there’s plenty of parking). The food is special, innovative, and wide ranging in style. And the atmosphere, while mostly along the lines of a restaurant, still has a nice pub feel. The beer, however, even though made here, is not at all memorable.

There is a decent sized bar area that has an intriguing wooden bar with stools and a brass foot rail. The bar is set at an angle to the walls and the kitchen hides beyond. Parallel to the bar and nearly in the middle of the room is an elaborate wrought iron railing lined with more bar stools and supporting a narrow rail to rest beers on. This also divides the bar area from the dining area which is filled with dark wooden tables and chairs. The floors are painted and polished concrete. There are tall ceilings with ceiling fans and textured painted walls (yellow and orange-red), which together with pale green wooden shutters give a warm restaurant feel to the place. Some interesting art hangs on the walls (e.g., “St. Patrick Banishing the Serpents” from Ireland). Outdoor seating is green plastic tables and chairs on a fenced brick patio right by the entrance and separated from the river only by a narrow drive.

Dempsey’s is located on the river, just across the foot bridge from the historic Old Mill shopping area. The bar and tall counter seating is adjacent to a fair size table area for dining. There are also several tables by the windows looking out to the good size riverfront patio area outside.
When I last visited, the tap list included 3 standards and 3 seasonals as well as a pear cider from Fox Barrel. I had my regular Red Rooster Ale and then enjoyed both the Winter Bock and the Christmas Barleywine.
The menu includes a nice selection of starters in addition to the entrees and pizza items. Many of the fruits and vegetables are organically grown at the owner’s ranch west of town. Lots of parking at the Golden Eagle Shopping Center; the brewpub is tucked into the back corner, by the river.
