Been going there for years.

They take care of the equipment and sanitation.

Good selection of hops & grains and several yeasts. Extract choice is limited but one can always bring their own ingredients. Steam jacketed kettles make the process fast and, because there is not heat on the bottom, it is hard to burn extracts. They also will dry hop.

One can bottle or keg.

If you have bottles or kegs already, the more expensive brews come out to about $0.11/oz or what one pays at grocery stores for good beer on sale. But the beer you can make at Gallaghers' is equal to or better than beer that costs $0.45/oz or more.

Want to have some fun with a group? All you need is a bunch of beer lovers and time to make two trips to Gallagher's in Edmonds.
After a couple of batches brewed with one of my neighbors we decided to invite others in the area we knew who liked beer. Voila! Next thing you knew we had seven people spending an afternoon brewing 27 gallons. How to decide what you want to try? They have at least 7 on tap that you can taste and then brew or just come with your own request and the knowledgable staff will steer you to the right recipe. All the equipment and supplies are there with instructions that make screw-ups difficult. A couple of hours (and a pint or two) later and you put your product into cooling for a couple of weeks. Return to do your bottling (your own bottles or you can buy from them) and you have about six cases of 12oz bottles for a single batch. You can fill other sizes or growlers if you prefer.
The atmosphere is really conducive to a good time. Tables and chairs are inviting as are cards, backgammon and cribbage boards so you play to see who buys the next pint.

Gallaghers' is a brew on premises operation, for those that don't know you go in and brew your beer, they take care of it and you come back at bottling time and package your finished beer. This is a really handy thing for those that are short of space for a brew rig.

The staff is quite knowledgeable and helpful for the new brewer. Talking to the owner they turn over the malt extract syrup quickly so staling is not the issue it can be for most brewers. They have a decent selection of specialty grain for steeping and some traditional brewing spices. However if you want something off of the beaten path you may need to bring it in yourself. They do dry hop for customers so that is an option. Also keep in mind that this is an extract brewery, all-grain is NOT an option here.

A downside is that they use Safale US-05 as their house strain. I did not ask how open they would be to using other strains that take more time. Another problem could be that many homebrew competitions disqualify beers brewed at BOP's from entering.

The cost is well in line for the amount of beer you get at the end, but since a standard batch is 12 1/2 gallons, it is substantial. If you are not sure what you want to brew, they have standard recipes and even some examples on tap.

If you are thinking about brewing your own beer this is a great way to get your feet wet without buying all of the equipment.

Want something fun and different to do on a Saturday afternoon?

Brew beer.

You can and without a lot of mess, clean-up and experimentation. Everything you need - boiling kettle, mash tuns, yeast, malts, hops, bottles, expert advice - it can all be had at Gallagher's in Edmonds.

Edmonds, Washington is a beautiful little community that sits right on a part of Puget Sound, that great body of water that separates Seattle proper from the rest of the islands and land masses known to the world collectively as "Seattle."

Gallagher's is the brainchild of Ed Gallagher, a one-time fisherman who, like most others, got into home brewing and watched it mutate into something else.

And what fun!

For those of you who have thought about trying your hand at brewing, this is the place. All the materials are available for a variety of beer to cook including step-by-step instructions...and 2 hours later, you're done. Watch 'em add the yeast and say adios to your "children" until 2 weeks later when you return to bottle 'em up and proudly give away a bottle or two to friends and relatives then sit back and listen to the praise.
"YOU made this?"
"This is---really good!"
"No? Really? You? Where is this place?"

Wife Persimmon & I tried our hand more than a year ago (Hazelnut Brown Ale) with very few mis-steps; in a moment of need to a bathroom, Persimmon - left alone - turned up the steam instead of down and boiled over the concoction. Then, due to previous commitments, we couldn't pick up the boys until 4 weeks out instead of 2 - but I firmly believe both those incidents added greatly to the final product. The beer was rich and brown with a creamy head and a subtle nutty sweetness that made it delicious.

Plus we only did (and as a result paid for) a half-batch - 33 bottles that lasted more than 6 months (well, some did.)

And I've got the bottles cleaned and boxed and ready to return to try our hand at a smoked, Imperial Stout.

We've even got our label in mind: TomCat Breweries presents Scratching Post Stout.
