Cider is greatly under appreciated in the US, but hopefully that is changing.

Fox Barrel is actually the third largest cider producer in the US but is still really tiny. I'm guessing that they have about 7 employees.

Their all-natural products are very clean and drinkable. Extremely well crafted.

They have only been around for about 4 and a half years, but in Oct 2008 they produced 14,000 gallons of cider.

Their standards are apple, pear, and black currant, but they recently got creative and produced a spiced mulling cider, expected to be served hot. It is so extremely delightful that I admonished them to save enough to enter in every cider competition they can find. It is definitely a gold medal winner.

These guys are worth watching, they are going to become famous.

Fox Barrel is a great place to stop on the trip over the hill between Reno and Sacramento. It’s just off of I80 in a quaint, historic railroad town. The tasting room is now open and drop ins are welcome most weekdays (weekend staffing may be spotty). There is a small bar for tasting and impromptu tours of the cidery are usually available. Ours was hosted by Fox Barrel president Bruce Nissen.
They are currently producing 3 hard ciders including Apple, Pear and Black Currant. I really liked the Pear Cider which recently won gold at the Great Lakes Olde World Syder Competition. Tasting was free and cider is available for purchase in kegs, 6 packs and 22 oz bottles. I also got to sample some of the fresh product directly from the fermenter (nearly 9% ABV) which had a crisp, dry taste I truly enjoyed. That means I’ll be making another visit early next year to sample some of their planned “toasting cider” which will be stronger than the current styles (4-6% ABV). During our short stop, we learned a lot about hard cider production and everyone was very friendly. We will definitely make this a frequent waypoint for future trips down to San Francisco.
